His Jewish family left Egypt and moved back to Paris, France, during the Suez Canal crisis in the 1950s. They later immigrated into America. United States where he was born. When he was a teenager, Avenaim got his first camera, an all-manual Exakta 35mm that his father brought home from Paris. Avenaim was raised within Chicago, Illinois.
Avenaim is a resident of Los Angeles, California, and his work includes the focus on portraits of clients with higher end tastes. Avenaim has shot models and fashion for magazines such as Vogue, GQ, Vanity Fair, Newsweek, and Glamour. His work is featured on the pages of Vogue, Newsweek, People, TV Guide, and Detour. The portraits of celebrities by Avenaim comprise Halle Berry, Helen Hunt, Jeff Bridges, Mel Gibson, Phil McGraw, Angela Bassett, Patricia Arquette, Brooke Shields, and Julia Roberts. At 19 years old, Avenaim started his career as an assistant for photographer Patrick Demarchelier in New York. He began working on his own in 1985, his first project was an international edition Vogue cover featuring the supermodel Cindy Crawford. Then he worked and lived from Milan with Italian Vogue in the supervision of the Editor-in-Chief Franca Sozzani.
