In the year 1996, White, along with paleontologist Berhane Asfaw discovered fossils of the 2.5 million years old species BOU-VP-12/130 Australopithecus Garhi. It is believed to be predating H. Habilis’s tool usage and production by 100,000 to 600,000 years.
White was hired as a researcher at his current job at the University of California, Berkeley in 1977. He worked together with J. Desmond Clark and F. Clark Howell. The year 1994 was when White found 4.4 million-year-old Ardipithecus Ramidus, which is a probable human ancestor of an era which was not awash in fossil evidence. In the vicinity of Awash river in Ethiopia White discovered an almost entire fossilized female skeleton called “Ardi”. It took him nearly 15 years to write the text of the report.
in 1974 White was part of Richard Leakey’s group at Koobi Fora, Kenya. Leakey had been so impressed by White’s work that he suggested White to his mother Mary Leakey, to help her with hominid fossils she discovered in Laetoli, Tanzania.
